Medical Walkers As A Mobility Aid

For most elderly people, ambulatory aids like medical walkers are an important part of their day-to-day life. Medical walkers are specially designed mobility aids intended for older persons who have difficulties with sustaining their balance when they are walking or standing. Some of the reasons why these aids are required could be chronic arthritis, deterioration of muscles, osteoporosis and injuries.

Most seniors who are able to walk in spite of these conditions won’t want to depend on wheelchairs to move around since this would indicate letting go of their flexibility of movement, as a result they opt for walkers.

There are basically two common types of walkers, which include the standard models and the ones with wheels. Standard walkers are basically frames with four legs and two handles on each side to allow users to maintain a good balance. The handles are generally attached across with two horizontal rods which could function as a backrest when the standard walker comes with a seat. These are ideal for first-timers as it will help them to become comfortable while using.

When it comes to walkers with wheels, you can find three types: two, three and four wheels medical walkers. Two wheel walkers boast two front legs with the wheels and also two back legs with rubber stoppers to prevent rolling.

The three wheel walkers will be ideal for negotiating around narrow areas in the house since there is a single front wheel, plus two back ones. However, there could be problem with this mobility aid because it would be harder to balance.

The four wheel model is actually the best of the three, since it is much easier to balance with this amount of wheels.

Prior to buying your first medical walker, it is best to consult your medical doctor or physical therapist so that they can recommend the right one for your condition. In addition, you also want to consider getting the type of walker that can support your size and also select one that is lighter in weight.
